Intertextuality:

Intertextuality:

"Intertextuality is the shaping of a text's meaning by another text" and this creates a related understanding in separate works which are produced to influence the reader based on their prior knowledge and understanding. The intertextual approaches that I decided to incorporate into my A- Level Music Video are from Axwell and Ingrosso "More Than You Know", Aviccii's "The Nights" Music Video and a scene from the hit sitcom 'Friends'.
The intertextual approach from the music video "More Than You Know" was the circular narrative, that is demonstrated by the rewinding of the scenes. I decided to use this intertextual approach owing to the message I wished to convey to the audience, which was that the summer and the freedom that people have from school or University and go on holiday is something that they wish to restart and begin again. It can also be interpreted that this effect allows for reminiscence, which is  a form of nostalgia which many of the 16-25 year- olds possess when reflecting back on school holidays. I believe that this intertextual approach was successful and carried out well, however if I were to do the video again I would create it in a form more like a home movie, which is something that the music video "More Than You Know" do extremely successfully. I also believe that this intertextual approach allows to conform to the codes and conventions of the dance music video genre, as the footage is fast pace which synchronises with the beat of my song "Under Control" by Calvin Harris -remix.
The second intertextual approach is from Avicii's music video "The Nights", where I decided to make an intertextual reference to the editing where the same shot is edited directly after each other to establish an effect. I decided to use this intertextual reference owing to it is parallel to the beat of the song and the effect creates this notion of continuity. I firmly believe that this was executed the way that I intended it to be and the only thing that I would change is to repeat the editing style in another section of my music video.
The third and final intertextual reference was from 'Friends' from the scene where Joey puts on a Union Jack hat whilst in London. I have specifically chosen to be intertextual to 'Friends' owing to it was a highly successful, world famous sitcom, and the episode in London was especially a well remembered and significant episode which fans of the show would know. In addition, the show appeals to a wide range audience, of all ages, including my 16-25 year old demographic target audience. This is owing to the show was shown on Comedy Central for years, before Netflix paid $100 million to keep streaming Friends. By having Friends on Netflix it creates a new audience with those who were too young or not born when it was first on screen. The show has managed to sustain its popularity over decades,  with a strong audience identification and pleasures. I believe that this intertextual approach was successful as I chose a similar hat and market stand, which allows for a mirroring of the scene, in the hope that the people who watch my video are able to make a direct comparison between the two. Furthermore, Friends was a comedy series that possessed elements of fun and enjoyment for the viewers, and this was the effect that I wanted to projected onto my audience, when they watched my music video.
